Indications:
This medication is indicated for the treatment of type II diabetes mellitus or the non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. It is used alone or in combination with other antihyperglycemic agents. It is also indicated for the prevention of diabetes in patients who are at high risk to acquire it.
Dosage and Administration:
The usual adult dose is 500 mg twice or three times a day. Another dose is 850 mg twice a day which can be increased to 3 g per day or as prescribed by the physician. Each tablet should be taken with food to prevent gastric upset.
Contraindications:
This medication is contraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to Metformin and its ingredients. It is also contraindicated to patients with cardiac failure, recent myocardial infarction, diabetic coma, liver disease, diabetic ketoacidosis, and shock. Most of all, it is contraindicated during pregnancy.
Precautions:
Use this medication with caution in patients with kidney disease, liver disease, serious infection, blood problems, breathing problems, and fertility problems. Avoid intake of alcoholic beverages as it may result in hypoglycaemia. Use a reliable birth control to reduce the risk of becoming pregnant while on Metformin therapy. It is also used with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Safety and efficacy of this drug during pregnancy and lactation is not established.
Adverse Reactions:
This medication is generally well tolerated. However, some adverse effects of this drug are reported such as nausea, diarrhea, headache, faintness, weakness, stomach upset, metallic taste, cold sweat, drowsiness, dizziness, tachycardia, confusion, flushing, rapid breathing, trouble breathing, and rashes. |
